Flowing in the moment.

“I am drunk, bewildered avalanche moving along somehow, trying to follow him.” -Rumi.
Drunk bewildered? If an intellectual and spiritually evolved Rumi can be directionless and bewildered in his pursuit, what happens to the rest of us?
As the Sufi mystic famously said, “Sell your cleverness and buy bewilderment.”
He repeatedly expressed the meaning and importance of forgetting that we have been traditionally taught and remaining bewildered, immersed in the search, even personifying it.
Ideally, one should start with a clean slate and be carried away by the moment, learning new lessons while unlearning old ones. It is crucial to match your rhythm to the feeling that invades you, to the state you occupy at the moment, be it a happy one, a heart-wrenching phase, or a quest. To surmount the moment, you need to give in to its mind, body, and soul. It is critical to flow into and become the moment before you know from it. While involved in a search, you must become the question itself before you start receiving answers. Your soul is not just seeking; it must become search personified. And that is why Rumi becomes a drunk, bewildered avalanche…
The same holds true for most of life’s experiences. Unless you plunge into the depths of emotion, understand, and live it entirely, you cannot get better of it, to surmount it!
To love fully, you must become love itself. Become a laughter person to enjoy happiness. To seek peace, become quiet. To enjoy a song, sway like music. Like finds like when sad, it’s the slower, more melancholy music that appeals to us. In a happy mood, we search for lifting, happy memories!
If you do not understand and deeply feel your own need, how will you find ways to fulfill it?
All creative people understand the importance of merging with the moment and flowing with it. When you allow yourself to do so, you get into a rhythm with the universal spirits and partake in the process of creativity and divinity. Take the instance of the workplace; most people who join a new place try to bring about changes instantly, attempting to stamp their individuality on an already existing entity forcibly. Everything that went earlier is discarded, all processes changed, and new methods employed. This results in chaos and wastage of the company’s time and effort. However, the most influential people will take time to understand their new place of work, gauge the situation, and merge with it for a while before attempting any required changes. This ensures that they add value to the place they join.
This is how every new project- professional or personal-must be started, with a clean slate. Unlearning all of you learned and leaving yourself open to new learning and demand is the best way to retain a young, contemporary mindset.
Coming back to emotions, one of the stages of overcoming grief is giving in to it entirely, allowing it to flow through you without resistance. That is the first stage towards healing.
When you fall in love for a while, you are obsessed; give in to the feeling; let it flow freely through your mind and body. Allow it to wash your soul and be open to all the learning this relationship must impart. Once it has enjoyed a free flow, love liberates and takes you to another level. The more you resist, the more it interrupts your state of mind and the rhythm of your present moment.
So, indulge the thoughts, feeling, and pull of the moment, merge with them, and go with the flow. This alone liberates us and allows us to move on in life.
