When I was a kid, my mother used to watch a serial named "Woh Rehne Waali Mehlon Ki", in which the lead actress would address herself as Hum. I remember wondering as a child, "What is wrong with her?", "Why does she refer to herself as Hum (we) instead of Mein (I)?". But I didn't have any answers then. Years later, I developed a deep affection for this word. In 2015, I went to Jharkhand for my graduation. I noticed that the people were addressing themselves as Hum and this took me back to my childhood memory.
One day I asked my friends, "Why do you address yourselves as Hum?" They responded, "We talk like this because your mein is our hum and we use Hum Log when we want to say "We". Basically it is influenced by their culture. Every language has its own beauty and every culture has its unique ways of communication. In fact, it is said that in India, after every few miles, the colloquial language of that region changes. Isn’t that intriguing? But this word has a special place in my heart.
It's not just about calling oneself Hum, but also the way they talk to others, with a lot of politeness. For example: "aap hamko bata dijiyega", "aap khana kha lijiye", "Aap rehne dijiye, hum kar lenge". Their hum and aap are soothing to the ears. Some of my dearest friends and teachers are from Bihar and Jharkhand and most of them have played an important role in my life. They have always guided me in my career and in life as well. I am grateful to all of them. That is why I have this special connection with these two states.
If you are talking about Bihar and Jharkhand, you can’t miss mentioning Chhath Puja. No matter which corner of the country they are in, they always want to be at home for Chhath Puja. Every year, I listen to the festive songs of Chhath Pooja, and I absolutely love them. I always try to follow the famous saying, "Jaisa des, Waisa bhes." If I go to South India, I will try to be a South Indian. If I go to Punjab, I will try to adapt to the Punjabi Culture. I am one of those individuals who is extremely interested in learning about various Languages, Cultures, and their Histories. India is a country of rich heritage and cultural diversity. Like Bihar, Jharkhand, and Punjab, I wish to learn more about other states of our country and beyond.
