First drafts are sacred: the importance of a first draft
What is special about first drafts? Are they really special?
When you create any piece of writing, you never attain satisfaction on the first go. There are so many, so many things that run in your mind and you just pour them out. It is better to pour out all that comes to your mind rather than sitting and staring at the screen blankly for hours together not knowing what to write. I believe that no first draft would have been made the final copy.
You may always feel that the first draft is irrelevant with regard to your journey of writing. If you believe so, then trust me, you are wrong.
Your first draft can be sloppy and scrappy – but trust me, never mind! You have to only let your mind loose because there’s no pressure! You are not going to show your first draft to anyone and hurray! That’s a blessing in disguise!
Your first draft is nothing but a plain mould. The real essence lies in the way you are able to shape the mould and make it look like how it has to actually be.
Let the river of your imagination flow on to your paper and then you bring it to life with words.
You may always think that your first draft will never be sufficient to make it to the final copy. But remember, failure is the first step to success.
Any writing, professional, academic, or even amateur is very subjective. A subjective piece of writing will always involve emotions right? So, if you make mistakes in your first draft, that’s completely normal.
When you are given a topic, the ways to write about it are massive. You just don’t know where to begin. Just jolt down your ideas and then you can see yourself changing (or can I say moulding?) it into something better.
One thing I like to say is, it takes a lot of, a lot of determination and patience to complete the work that you are aiming to write. How do you think famous writers would have made it to the very end? It is because they would have carried these values within themselves.
Always be proud that you have been able to finish the first draft that you had in mind. Celebrate your accomplishment and then put your mind to rest for a while. Wait patiently and ideas will definitely come flooding into your mind. Make changes and enjoy the fruit of your hard work!
You can consider your first draft as an indicator of the risk you are willing to take and the heights you are ready to go to achieve your final output.
Your first draft is your first child – always treasure it and remember what it means to you.
