Living In The Present

By Ritisha Sharma

We know what “present” is in English, a tense, but do we know what “present” is in life? Are we living in that present? One thing is clear, if we don’t know what the meaning of the present is, we don’t know how to live in the present. If we don’t know what is happening at that moment, we don’t know how to live in the present. So, what is living in the present?

Living in the present is focusing and enjoying the things which are happening at that moment. We all are stressed about what will happen in the future but we don’t understand that it’s not in our hands. Yes, we can plan about our future but don’t plan too much, or else we will end up stressing about it, which is not healthy. We have our past which we can’t change because it’s gone now and what is done, cannot be undone. Then, we have our future about which we don’t know, …... all we have is TODAY. Now it’s our choice, whether we want to live this today or think about tomorrow. We don’t get to live that same day again and again. If we are just waiting for the future to come and if we don’t accept the past… we might lose what we have in the present. Honestly, the future will never come because when the future will come, it will ultimately become your present.

When you can smell the flowers, when you can smell and taste the food and say “yum!”, when you can hear the birds chirping, when you can breathe the fresh air, when you can sing out loud, when can dance your heart out, when you can smile

and laugh for the small things, when you are focusing on the little things, when you appreciate the moments of the day, when you can feel the bright rays of the sun, when you enjoy the journey more than the destination, when you can be happy for no reason but just because you are living, when you can love the things which you do and when you can like the things which you love…. you are in the present!

Dalai Lama once said, “The past is past, and the future is yet to come. That means the future is in your hands- the future entirely depends on the present. That realization gives you a great responsibility.”

Time and life will never stop for you or for anyone, so just enjoy every moment consciously as if it is last, enjoy your surroundings, be grateful for what you have, accept all situations, make everyone and yourself happy and just Celebrate Life with a Smile.
