One Day

By Sharika Sriramanan

A Letter to My Younger Self

My love,

I just wanted to pop in and check in on you.

I know you’re going through a lot. I know you’ll laugh because those words barely scratch the surface of what you’re going through.

But nevertheless, I wanted to tell you that what you’re doing now is breathtakingly inspiring. I love you and I am so proud and grateful for how you’re powering through everything.

What I can offer you in return now is this small reminder of what your life ends up becoming thanks to all the incredible, mind bending effort you are putting into figuring out yourself and your life now:

I wanted to let you know that one day you'll wake up and the world outside you will be quiet. You’ll wake up to gentle, slow heartbeats, calm, measured breathing and remember that you spent the night with peaceful dreams and deep, undisturbed, restful sleep.

One day you'll wake up and it’ll be to the most mundane, most normal, most impossible sounds - the low distant rumble of traffic, the crisp chirping of the birds, the comforting whirring hum of the fan blades.

And nothing else.

One night you'll be woken up and you'll realise you didn't revisit a dark place in those first moments before you find solid ground. That you didn't wake up to a racing heart, to loud screams inside your head, to deep unrest low down in your gut. You'll realise you could fall back asleep after, that you didn't spend hours calming down your breathing again.

All those bad nights are just a distant memory now.

One day you'll wake up and you’ll be looking forward to your day. You'll wade through curiosity, options, hope and find your way through hobbies, interests and whims- you’ll be travelling to incredible places, figuring out a career that excites and fulfils you, you’ll be cooking wonderful meals, reading wonderful books and relaxing in your wonderful little house.

One day you'll wake up and you'll be home in the sanctuary you worked so hard to construct. You would have found your way back to yourself, life would be as magical as you'd hope it would be and it would be worth every moment, decision, and experience that guided you there. You'll be happy, loved, healthy and at peace doing everything that once seemed like a distant dream, so impossible to reach and make your own.

One day you'll wake up and it'll all be okay. You'll be okay. It would have all worked itself out.

Keep going. I am so, so, so proud of you.

You make it out.

Your life is wonderful, you are doing great and it is because you did the best you could with what you had. I am eternally in awe of you. I owe you for the life you have allowed me to grow into.

I love you so.

Thank you for everything! <3
