Painter's Poet

By Shaikh Mohd Gaus Aminuddin

He paints the stars in his art,

And I weave poems for his scarred heart.

Oh, the heavens seem more dramatic today,

His smile was a blessing that lit my way.

Yet here I am, crying in the night you strayed,

Tasting the bittersweet death of love—should I pray?

Will there be a moment when your lips part?

Only to leave me shackled when the floodgates depart.

Stay, if just for a moment, till I hold you tight,

Let me drink the tears that kept us apart tonight.

I dream of a night where you’re forever in my embrace,

Until my breath fades, and sadness leaves its trace.

Wish we were born together, a lifetime to share,

To learn your habits, laughter, and despair.

Whenever I gaze at the sky, it paints your face,

A joyful torment of jealousy in that celestial space.

The stars can see you whenever they desire,

Why am I so far, lost in this unfair fight of fire?
