Shrimp Farming: Advantages, Challenges & Solutions

By Saikat Kumar Maji

Shrimp is the most valuable marine product traded worldwide. Shrimp raised for food was a 10.6 billion industry in 2005. Presently, the growth rate of production is approximately 10 percent per year, which is among the highest in the aquaculture industry. India's long history of shrimp aquaculture achievements and setbacks illustrates the industry's potential as well as its issues. Due in large part to the efforts of individual farmers, the industry saw rapid growth in the 1990s, but it operated in a setting where there was frequently insufficient regulatory guidance. Over 85% of shrimp aquaculture farms were small (< 2 Ha), despite a sharp increase in the total area occupied by these farms during this time. The average amount of shrimp produced per hectare on these farms was approximately 0.73 tons, which is low when compared to other countries that produce shrimp. Without sufficient regulatory oversight, farmers imported feed and seed stock from nations like the Philippines and Taiwan to boost productivity.

Fisheries constitute a substantial economic sector in India and present numerous prospects for growth. This is explained by the nation's potential and variety of resources. With over 50% of the world's shrimp produced, Andhra Pradesh is the primary producer. With the goal of minimizing the environmental impact of shrimp aquaculture, the Indian government is pushing sustainable shrimp farming methods that will yield premium ‘sustainable' shrimp. Additionally, the export of shrimp is encouraged by the Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA) and the Seafood Exporters Association of India (SEAI), particularly for products that are ready to eat and cook. In 2022, the shrimp market in India reached a volume of 0.85 million tons. In the forecast period of 2023–2028, the market is anticipated to expand at a compound annual growth rate of 9.60%.

Challenges: The Present challenge in Shrimp Culture industry faces more issues like various types of diseases which cause slow growth and mortality.

Solutions:

  1. As in India 90% of the farmers belong Earthen Pond, so proper pond preparation is the key measures for culture success.

  2. Strengthen the seed to stock in Nursery for 30 days and then shift to Grow out ponds for better growth and survival.

  3. Water quality is the key factor for the culture. To remove the waste particles from the source water, it must implement the proper filtration system of the water by implementing Reservoir system.

  4. Water quality measurement at Lab frequently & in Farm everyday is the key success measures

  5. Proper reservoir system with scientific manners like partition method and Dosage installation must be needed.

  6. Maintain sufficient Dissolved Oxygen level (>5 ppm) is the crucial factor to avoid major problems.
