The Mystery Beneath the Surface
An Unusual Classmate
Valentina’s school year had always felt dull, however, with a few hobbies that kept her busy, she felt it less depressing. But of course, as usual, there was nothing special about it.... well… until Zeno showed up one day. He was a new student, but just that he wasn’t any ordinary new kid, instead, he was extremely different. He had a strange way about him, sort of like a power to make everyone to like him, even getting friendly with the crankiest of teachers.
Zeno fit in way too naturally. By the second day, he literally knew everyone’s names. By the third, he was laughing at jokes or talking about topics no one even remembered telling him. People loved Zeno since, he was smart, funny, and multi-talented, which was quite unusual for a fifteen-year-old. Funny enough, he bragged about knowing twelve different languages in class, which made them wonder whether he was just being boastful, or was it even possible?
Asher, Valentina’s best friend, spoke up. “Some people are just good at this stuff, huh? When we first joined, people barely even answered us,” he huffed, crossing his arms who was usually a troublemaker.
Most of the time, you would find him in the hallway getting yelled at by Principal Mr. Haddock or goofing around in the detention room.
“Tell me about it… Everyone had given us weird looks, on our first day,” Valentina muttered.
As they walked along the bustling school corridor, they saw Zeno talking to the school’s basketball team, giggling and cracking jokes. Suddenly, something caught Valentina’s attention. She stopped, staring in their direction for a few seconds, her brows furrowing in confusion. Zeno’s shadow didn’t seem to match his movements - or was it her imagination? A strange feeling in her head told her that something about him wasn’t right.
“Val?” Asher called out to her, snapping her out of her thoughts. “Let’s go.”“Uh...huh,” she stuttered. “Y-yeah… Let’s go.”
She glanced back once more, before she walked away with Asher, but shrugged it off… Maybe it was all just in her head.
By the end of the week, Zeno had invited Valentina and Asher to sit with him during lunch. As they were getting along, Zeno then mentioned something out of the blue.
"Hey Valentina… You’re scared of clowns too, right? Me too!" he said with a sly smile.Valentina looked up from her food, startled. How did he know? She’d never told anyone about that.
“How….er…I mean who told you that?” She asked, her voice rising in panic.
Zeno's smile widened, though there was something disturbing about it. "Aah…Just a guess!” he winked with a quirky laugh, like it was no big deal, and quickly changed the subject.
Valentina felt a chill down her spine. There was definitely something off about the way he spoke, as though he knew more than he was letting on.
Reflections of Doubt
Valentina couldn’t stop thinking about Zeno. Everyone at school was talking about how amazing he was, but to her, something about him just felt... off. On Tuesday, she passing by the gym when she overheard a girl whispering, “Zeno knew my mom was sick before I even told anyone!” Valentina’s stomach twisted.
That afternoon, she pulled Asher to a quiet spot in the library. “Asher, something is seriously weird about Zeno,” she said, nervously peeking over her shoulder. Before Asher could answer, a voice made her heart jump.
“What are you two whispering about?” Zeno was standing right there, his eerie smile giving her goosebumps.
Valentina forced a smile, her heart pounding. “Oh, just a crazy dream I had,” she blurted. She was feeling irritated at him for barging into their conversation. She even imagined herself standing up and smacking him with the hardbound book she was holding.
“Yeah, a dream,” Asher added quickly, but Zeno didn’t seem to buy that. “Sure,” Zeno replied with a knowing smirk before walking away.
As soon as he was gone, Valentina let out a big breath. “That guy is a walking nightmare,” she muttered.
Asher shrugged. “May be….he’s just different ? I think you’re overthinking it….”
The bell rang, snapping them out of the moment. She grabbed her bag and got up, with just one thing on her mind, she knew for sure: Zeno was trouble, and she had to stay away. Although Asher brushed it off all lightly, Valentina knew that he too was starting to have his doubts too.
That afternoon, as Valentina left the library and made her way down the hall toward the exit, she slowed her steps when she heard Zeno’s voice near the gym entrance once more. She glanced over and spotted him entertaining a group of students with his absurd dance moves. For a split second, she thought she saw his reflection ripple in the mirror, as if it wasn’t solid. She blinked a few times, and everything seemed normal again.
“Did I really just see that...?” she muttered under her breath. Or was it something wrong with my eyes? she wondered.
Before she could ponder on it, someone bumped into her. Startled, she turned to see Asher grinning at her, an awkwardly drawn Mustache scribbled over his lip.
“Hey, what’s with the staring?” Asher teased. “You look like you just saw a ghost.” He giggled.
Valentina paused, then burst out laughing. Asher joined in, their laughter echoing down the hallway. For a moment, her anxiety disappearing away. But deep down, she knew the feeling wouldn’t stay gone for long—especially not tonight.
The Hunt For Answers
That night, Valentina tried to brush aside her fears. She sat up in bed with a book in her hands, hoping to calm her sprinting thoughts. The room felt darker than usual, the shadows creeping along the walls, but she told herself it was nothing. Every creak of the doors and windows made her heart race, but she forced herself to ignore it. The whistling wind outside sent a chill down her spine, but she refused to let it bother her.
She flipped another page of the book, trying to focus, but the words blurred together. Her eyelids grew heavier, her head nodding as drowsiness slowly took over. The book slipped from her hands, and soon she was fast asleep.
But in the silence of the night, something whispered in the dark, as if Zeno’s presence was still there, watching from the shadows. She felt a faint rustle of footsteps along the floorboards of her room.
“Zeno?” she called, her voice trembling. “Is that you?”
“Valentina,” he replied, his voice echoing strangely, as if it were coming from everywhere and nowhere. “You’ve been watching me, haven’t you?”
She tried to figure out where the voice was coming from, and slowly, from the darkness of the room, a figure emerged—a figure all too familiar. It was Zeno!
As he stepped forward, the shadows around him seemed to move like living things.
“You’ll find out soon enough,” he said, his voice soft but sinister. “Room 13 is just the beginning.”
Valentina tried to move, but her body felt frozen, unable to budge. She felt movement at the foot of her bed, then the cold wetness of something touching her face. She heard a sound—sinister, like a chainsaw.
She jolted awake, gasping for air. She looked around, only to find that her cat, Missy, had licked her face, and the "chainsaw" sound was nothing but Missy’s purring back against her pillow, her thoughts still tangled but growing quieter. She realized it was all just a nightmare, although her heart was still pounding as it felt so real. Finally, she let out a quiet sigh, shrugged it off and pulled Missy close, cuddling her. She felt the warmth of her cat making her feel safe. With Missy still purring and nestling her face on Val, drifted back to sleep.
The next day at school, Valentina couldn’t focus. Her dream replayed in her mind on a loop, Zeno’s chilling grin haunting her. She needed answers.
As they sat together during lunch, Valentina wanted to share her dream with Asher. But before she could speak, she hesitated. Asher was always so nonchalant about everything, and she wasn’t sure he’d take her seriously. She opened her mouth, but stopped. Instead, she tugged at his sleeve.
“What now?” Asher asked, taking a bite of his sandwich, clearly uninterested.
“What do you know about room 13?” she said, her voice low. “Do you know about it?”
Asher paused mid-bite, raising an eyebrow. “Room 13? You mean that old storage room everyone says is haunted?”
“Is it really haunted?”, Valentina now all wide eyed. It all made sense-at least some.
Asher rolled his eyes. “Yeah, sort of…heard from the senior boys….don’t tell me you are going to believe it too.”
Valentina shook her head, feeling frustrated. “No, Asher. I think there’s something in that room... something connected to Zeno.”
Asher sprung up back in his chair. “What ?!!...Room 13 has been there ever since you and I joined the school! Who knows …it might have been there for ages…and Zeno just joined last week!”
“I mean…well…”, Val began.
“Okay, let’s say there is something weird about Zeno”, Asher continued cutting her off, “What are you gonna do? Run into Room 13 and scream at a bunch of dusty old boxes? ‘Hah! I got you!’ or something?”
“YOU-” Valentina stopped herself and sighed, trying again. “Listen… can’t we just go take a look....at least it could have some answers we are looking for”
Asher sulked; his usual carefree attitude replaced by unease. “And how do you suggest we do that without making it obvious?”
Valentina leaned in closer. “Well, there is the sports practice in the third period, and everyone will be out in the field…”, her eyes lighting up.
“Eavesdrop?” Asher interrupted, “Now you’re talking”, a smirk creeping up his face, ever ready for excitement, or rather trouble.
Valentina managed a weak smile, but the plan was in its place.
As the bell rang, the students rushed to the field for the practice, Val and Asher had something else up their sleeve. They hung around the corridor, Asher pretending to adjust the nearby bulletin board secretly listening in on the teacher’s conversation in the other room, while Valentina pretended to open her locker to get her sport shoes.
“Psst…,” Asher whispered to Valentina later, sliding next to her “I don’t know …but here’s the thing. I just heard Mrs. Jen was talking to Mr. Haddock about the storage room about it being ….off limits…. for a reason.”
Valentina leaned closer. “What reason?”
Asher paused for a bit to think if he heard anything else. “Didn’t stick around long enough to hear. Thought I’d leave the snooping for you to do.”
Valentina rolled her eyes but couldn’t tell if she was filled with excitement or her fear. They were getting closer to something.
The corridor was now empty, only the two of them casually inching towards the storage room. Asher reached out to the door and pushed down the handle. It creaked, the sound of it echoing in the hallway, making Val anxious than ever. With a sudden push, Asher pushed the door with his shoulder but couldn’t. It was Locked!!
“Move over... Lemme try”, said Val, pushing it harder. Just as she was onto it, faint footsteps were heard at the far end of the corridor.
“Hurry up…”, said Asher in an urgent plea.
Suddenly, the door gave in and Val was hurled in, partly because of the door jerked open and partly because of Asher shoving her inside the room as he had heard someone in the corridor. He quickly and quietly closed the door. Both Val and Asher, their hearts pounding, were very still, their backs behind the door, as they felt someone coming closer. They could hear someone singing and it soon died away.
“Phew !!....I think it’s Mr. Jones doing his cleaning rounds… “That’s him humming...”, said Val sighing.
Now they turned their gaze to the room, which had boxes stacked one top of another in a corner, some old rugs, a box of old lost and found…and by the looks of it, it looked like it never found. And on the other side of the room, they found old broken chairs, tables and wooden boxes, it looked like a mess.
“Where do we begin ?” Val scanning the place.
“Allow me~ The brave, handsome Asher!” Asher straightening his shoulders and walking towards one of the corners where piles of cartons were kept. Not even seconds past when he almost let out a scream and jumping on top of one of chairs.
“Shh….are you crazy”, Val eyed at him, “You are going to get us caught!”
Asher still up on the chair, pointed towards a cockroach running around.
Val almost blurted out a laugh before she covered her covered her mouth. “So much for the Grea….t Asher !”, she snickered.
Asher and Val now being serious, started to rummage through the boxes. They found some empty cans, which made Asher shudder, almost knocking off a small box.
“Ash….are you okay?”, Val looking at him.
Asher turning pale, like a thought just flashed by him, his voice quieter than usual, “I just remembered something…ah may be its nothing, just leave it’, he sighed.
But Val wasn’t going to let that pass. She knew something was different about Ash. She knew Ash wasn’t at all serious unless something was troubling him. She looked at him steadily, “Tell me Ash…what is it?”
“Well…You know, I saw something strange about Zeno earlier….didn’t think of it too much”
Valentina turned to him; her curiosity piqued. “What do you mean?”
Asher hesitated for a moment, then lowered his voice further. “I was outside, near the vending machines. Zeno picked up a Coke can… but it didn’t look like he was just picking it up. It was like the can flew up to his hand, like it was magnetized or something.”
Valentina blinked, taken aback. “What? I knew something was terribly wrong with Zeno!”
Asher nodded; his usual casual demeanour replaced by a rare hint of unease. “Yeah, it was weird. Thinking about it ….I know why are suspicious of Zeno”
“Well, that’s the reason we’re here. We need answers! …I didn’t tell you this, but I had a strange dream last night, where Zeno talks to me about Room 13”, she explained.
“Whoa !! now that’s something”, Asher now being more serious, as he began rummaging through the dusty boxes, “This might be a link…”, he murmured.
They found old school year books, broken chairs and outdated sports equipment. The dim light of their phone flashlights flickered over cobwebs and peeling wallpaper.
Asher sneezed loudly, waving dust from his face. “Ugh, all this buildup and it’s just boring junk.”
“Keep looking,” Valentina urged, her tone filled with determination. She shifted a heavy box aside, revealing a strange object. It was an old, locked wooden box with intricate carvings of symbols neither of them could recognize. A cold draft seemed to emanate from it, making both of them shiver despite the still air in the room.
Asher leaned in, inspecting the chest with a mixture of curiosity and wariness. “Okay, this is definitely creepier than broken chairs and cobwebs.”
Valentina crouched down, running her fingers over the carvings. “What do you think this means? it looks...so ancient.”
“Ancient or not,” Asher said, stepping back, “things with weird carvings usually mean bad news in horror movies. Maybe we just leave it alone?”
Valentina shot him a look. “Come on, Asher. We didn’t sneak in here just to stop now. There has to be a reason this was hidden.”
She tugged on the lid, but it didn’t budge. “It’s locked.”
Asher glanced around, rummaging through nearby boxes. “Maybe there’s a key lying around. Old movies love keys just sitting in obvious places.”
After a few minutes of searching, Valentina called out. “Found something!” She held up a rusted key, its shape matching the lock on the box almost perfectly. As Valentina was about to unlock the box they heard footsteps, They quickly hid behind a dusty old couch. Someone kicked it open gently and walked in slamming the door behind him.
“Got you.” A voice spoke up, Asher turned around to see who it was. It was Zeno who was inches away from his face with a wide unsettling and unreal grin. Asher flinched, they both got up with widened eyes, They saw Zeno’s face and was it a face ?! It was quickly transforming into a monstrous face, almost like his features were fading with only the eyes glaring back stark red. Were they dreaming….Val couldn’t fathom that this could be so bad…Asher on the other hand was just frozen as though he was bewitched.
Valentina quickly shot a glance at the nearby old pipe. Without much thought, she grabbed the pipe and flung it at Zeno head, she was now panicking.
The Unveiling
There was a dull thud as Zeno staggered backward, his hands gripping the sides of his face. For a brief moment, the dim light around him seemed to waver, like the flicker of static on a faulty TV screen. In those brief flashes, his face appeared normal—human. But beneath that frail surface, there was something... something deeply unsettling, something not quite human.
Valentina and Asher froze, their breath echoing. Zeno lifted his head slowly, the grin wiped from his face. For the first time, he looked truly angry. The dim light around him seemed to thicken and stretch, creeping across the room like ink spreading over paper.
“Big mistake! Argh!” Zeno hissed, his voice glitching.
The air in the room turned icy, and the walls seemed to press in closer as Zeno advanced—but it wasn’t Zeno anymore. He moved with a jerky, unnatural rhythm that sent a shiver down Valentina’s spine. She tightened her grip on the pipe, her knuckles turning white.
"Stay back!" she shouted, raising it again with her trembling hands. Somehow, the fear within her began to shift, replacing it with an unshakable will to survive. Asher too found his ground. He wasn’t going to give in, which of course was new to him.
Before she could react, the pipe vanished from her hands as if plucked away by some unseen force. Her mouth fell open in shock, and she exchanged a panicked glance with Asher. The room seem to spin violently, the walls blurring together in a frenzy. The monstrous eyes with an unnatural stare seemed to be holding them in captivity.
The panic overwhelmed them. Valentina’s knees tightened, and Asher’s vision darkened. Moments later, they were in pitch darkness as they collapsed to the ground.
Sometime passed before they stirred awake, only to find themselves in an entirely different place—a different dimension. Valentina opened her eyes, still slumped on the ground. She sat up slowly, rubbing her forehead as she was having a pounding headache.
“Crap…what … what just happened?” she muttered, glancing around. Her eyes widened in disbelief.
It looked like their school hallway, but it was all wrong—stretched out endlessly, the walls cracked and crumbling. The bulletin board burned down, likely with fire, and the entire area felt eerily lifeless, as if the colour had drained away. It looked like ancient ruins. The atmosphere was cold and eerie.
She jumped slightly at the sound of a groan nearby and turned quickly.
“Ugh… my head is killing me…” a familiar voice mumbled.
Asher groaned, holding his head as he stood up shakily beside Valentina. "Where... where are we?" he asked, his voice cracking a little.
"We’re done for !," she muttered, her voice shaking. "What’s happening?! What did we do to deserve this?! I—" Her words broke off as she gripped her hair, panic taking over.
Asher squatted beside her, placing a hand on her shoulder. 'Val, hey, calm down! We’ll get out of this somehow. We just... we need to figure out how we even got here.' His voice wasn’t as steady as he wanted it to be. 'I should’ve listened when you said Zeno was acting weird,' he admitted, glancing uneasily at the endless hallway around them.
Before either of them could say anything else, a loud, sharp ringing filled the air, making them both wince. It was followed by this low, horrible growl that made their skin crawl. Clamping their hands over their ears, they stumbled down the hall until they found an empty classroom. They huddled inside, the heavy door creaking shut behind them.
Asher sat on the floor, pulling his knees to his chest. "What are we even supposed to do if we can’t get out of this... this messed-up place?" he said quietly, staring at the ground. "We can’t stay here forever. We’ll—"
Suddenly, heavy footsteps echoed through the halls, getting closer and closer.
Valentina shot to her feet, grabbing the wooden plank and holding it tight. "What is that?" she whispered, her voice barely audible over the thudding.
Asher swallowed hard and crept to the door, cracking it open just enough to see outside. His hands shook as he spotted something moving in the hallway—a tall, skinny figure with unnaturally long legs. It walked in this weird, jerky way, like a puppet on strings. Its head twisted around with a loud crack, and Asher’s breath caught in his throat.
Then it spoke. At first, its voice was all garbled, like static on a TV. But as it kept talking, the sound became clearer.
"Come out, come out, wherever you are~" the creature said in a sing-song voice, its tone sending chills down Asher’s spine.
He slammed the door shut and backed away, grabbing Valentina’s arm. His face was pale, and his voice shook. "I-it’s out there," he stammered. "And... it’s Zeno’s voice, but it doesn’t look like him."
Valentina and Asher scrambled to a corner of the classroom, crouching down as the sound of the footsteps grew louder. The thing was getting closer to their room. Valentina’s eyes darted to the wooden plank in Asher’s hands, and suddenly, an idea popped into her head.
"Shh!" she whispered, her voice barely audible. "I have a plan."
Facing the Unknown
Valentina glanced at Asher, who met her gaze with wide, terrified eyes. His throat went dry and quietly mouthed, “We can’t stay here.”
Without a word, Valentina nodded. They had to do something, anything. To survive. She glanced at the sharp end of the wooden plank, now aware that this might be their only chance. She took it from Asher’s hand, testing the weight. Her plan was risky, but desperate times called for desperate measures.
"Get ready…" she whispered to Asher. He gave her a nod, a determined expression on. He crouched low beside her, grabbing a sharp glass piece from the broken window.
The monster’s voice grew closer, and its footsteps echoed through the hallway. Valentina's hands shook, but she tried to steady herself. The last thing they could afford was hesitation.
“Three… two…one...,” she whispered, and with a sudden swift move, she lunged forward, slamming the plank through the door’s crack just as the creature's arm reached out. The plank stabbed the creature’s thin, spindly arm, making a sickening crack sound as it struck with something solid. For a moment, the creature froze. The arm twitched, then fell limp. A terrible shriek filled the hallway as the creature yelled in agony.
Valentina felt a surge of adrenaline. She pulled back quickly, grabbing Asher’s arm. “Now!” she whispered.
With one last glance at the door, they darted out of the classroom, barely escaping as the creature’s ragged breathing filled the space behind them. They dashed down the endless hallway but their escape was far from guaranteed.
The dim, flickering lights above them cast long, twisted shadows on the broken walls. The entire school had turned into a nightmare, every corner feeling like a trap, everything looked like it was twisting and turning enough to make them vomit, As they ran, Valentina kept her eyes peeled, searching for any way out.
Then, suddenly, Asher tripped.
His foot caught on something hard, and with a yelp, he tumbled forward, landing face flat onto the cold floor. “Ow! Damn it!” he groaned, pushing himself up.
“Are you okay?” Valentina whispered urgently, her eyes darting around. She noticed the object that had caused him to trip. It was a small, worn box with strange, ancient carvings the same as the one they’d found in the storage room. Her pulse quickened. Could this be another clue? A way out?
Without thinking, Valentina grabbed the box and yanked it toward her. “We need to hide. Now!”
Asher scrambled to his feet, still disoriented. They barely had time to find a room before the creature’s footsteps started again. They ran into the nearest door and slammed it shut, just as the sound of scraping claws echoed from the hallway.
They found themselves in another small room, but this one was far different from the others. An odd smell lingered and it was a bit empty.
“Where are we?” Asher whispered
Valentina shrugged and held the box up to a dim light trying to make out the carvings, She set it on the broken desk and tried to open it.
“Hey, Asher...it seems to have a lock”, said Val… “Oh wait…my hair pin.” She quickly removed it from the hairlock.
“This could work…”, said Asher.
Without delay, Val started to work on it.
“Don’t…...Don’t touch that box!”, a voice shrieked from behind the door, along with vigorous banging on the door. It looked as though the door may give way anytime.
“Did you hear that ....Now we got to open it anyhow…’, said Val, even more determined than ever.
Suddenly, the door jerked open, filling the room with thick smoke slowly transforming into a figure. Val, her heart pounding, continued on her eyes fixed on the box. Her pin had gone bent due to the continuous trying. Ash who was right behind, waved the wooden plank trying to stall the beast, but he was flung against the wall with a loud thump.
Almost immediately, the box snapped opened, and the beast let out a shrilling screech.
The Final Confrontation
The box emitted a strange bright bluish light. It began to pull the creature in from Zeno’s body, while it frantically tried to hold on to something. But the force seemed to be so powerful and right before their eyes the creature was sucked into the box and it shut close by itself. They both looked at each other in silence for a few seconds before Ash…jumped up - “W-WE DID IT! WE ACTUALLY DID IT, VAL!”
Val couldn’t believe what just happened. She heaved a sigh and slumped on the ground, when she heard a familiar sound…
“Argh...my head…w-what’s going on? Where...am I?” said Zeno with a groan.
“Zeno ?!!”, exclaimed Ash with his mouth wide open, “Haven’t we just finished the job, Val ?” he looked at her flustered.
As Val slowly approached, she realised it was Zeno. “Wait Ash, this is the real Zeno”, she said, as she quickly helped him up.
Soon both realised this was just a plain old kid who was a victim of a sinister being. When, how and where, no one had any answers…but they were happy that it was now gone!
They looked around, and realized they were still in the same storage room that they had first entered in. It looked as though time had frozen; nothing had changed. Zeno looked around to see himself in a storage room.
He looked at them with all sorts of questions in his head.
“Long story Zen.” said Valentina, but this time with a relieved smile on her face.
“For now, let’s get out of here before everyone’s back from the field”, said Asher, dusting himself and correcting his hair.
They were quickly out of the door and soon heading towards the corridor, when just around the corner, they came face to face with principal Mr. Haddock, who looked at them, raising his eyebrows, “Why weren’t you in the field ?”, his imposing tone, a tone you wouldn’t forget, his glasses drawn down to his nose, “..and what’s with your uniforms …were you all in scuffle?”, he retorted as he scanned them from head to toe.
He was right—they were a mess. The boys’ white shirts were covered in stains, and there was a dust bunny stuck in Ash’s hair. They were caught off guard, they froze, but Val quickly blurted out that they’d been working on their project and had just come from the art room. Mr. Haddock wasn’t getting fooled. He gave them a doubtful look, his eyes narrowing as he told them to follow him to the detention room.
They were all sat in detention, until 3 pm. Even though, it felt like hours in that strange dimension it was just mere minutes in reality and so much better than what they had experienced a few hours ago. During that time, they talked to Zeno, describing all the strange things that happened with him and the mysterious dimension.
“W-Woah…seriously?! I.. I don’t remember anything….ah…I do have a faint memory of going into our house garage to get some tools for my dad …and then …”, he was trying hard to recollect his memory, “oh yes, I did see a strange shadow standing at the doorway of the garage and I guess I passed out.”
“Its okay, now that’s all in the past, but we still have some more work to finish,” said Val as she pointed to her bag where she had hidden the box.
“Yes… you are right!’, said Zeno, “And by the way, Thank you so much for saving me from that whatever that …being is,” he shuddered.
As bell rang, and the three of them were out. Instead of going home, they headed for the nearby beach which they had planned earlier.
Soon the three of them were on the beach. Valentina held the box, her hands a bit shaky. “Now no one will ever open that box and suffer the same.” She said before throwing the box far into the sea and they all smiled at each other as they watched It sink, Never to be seen again.
And that was the last they saw of that adventure... or was it the beginning of something else?
A few months later - On the beaches of England :
“Oi, Mark! Check this out, mate!” the diver hollered to his buddy, who was busy poking around some poor starfish. As he hurled the box back in their boat, he gave it a shake and held it up to his ear. A faint, gurgle whisper could be heard.
“Yea Joey… OPEN THE DARN’ BOX, YOU MUPPET! Might be somethin’ decent in there!” Mark yelled back, while a dull thump resonated from inside the box. Both men looked at each other then shrugged it off with a smug grin.
“Now, what’s this beauty, eh?” said Joe, said, brushing his hand over the intricate carving on the box. “How ‘bout we take a proper look, eh…”
