Unblessed Love

By Gurleen Kaur

Twelve years have passed since that fateful day, Sallie let out a sigh heavy with memories, beauty and pain fuses to make her eyes as cloudy as the weather outside. The sun was up though not in its full glory. The fluffy shrouds of effervescent clouds make it a fuzzy ball of fire. The ritualistic morning chants float in from a nearby place of worship. The household chores lie waiting to be taken care of. It’s 6 O’ clock in the morning and her tea is already brewing in the blue ceramic teapot. Her thoughts too brewed fragrantly like the tea in the pot. Sallie loves to listen to happy chirping of birds outside. She looked outside through her living room window while she sipped her tea. The tea of thoughts, brewed in a bubble of reminiscences. The fresh green of the foliage glistened with the dull reflected rays of the sunlight on the fresh dew drops resting on them. The day was inviting, the morning scenes and sounds gradually soothed her nerves and had a calming effect to get her ready for the busy schedule waiting to be tackled.

Little did she know that the morning quietude was as temporary as the floating clouds in the skies, that it would lead to such a disquiet day ahead that will leave her spent, exhausted and helpless.

Peter calling Sallie, “where is my newspaper?” “Hey, Morning Peter.” Sallie, “I have a big meeting today.” Peter reading newspaper quickly as he wants to get ready fast. Peter has back-to-back meetings. Peter runs a high-profile business and is a member of board of directors of the company. While Peter is getting ready for the office, Sallie prepares breakfast for him. The eggs are in the egg boiler, the veggies are chopped for the sauté. While peeling the beetroot for the juice, the red colour reminds her of the colour of love which is red. She compares the nutrients of the beetroot with the nutrients of love. It helps in increasing the blood flow, the blood that once shooted up, when he first spoke to her. Sallie blinks her eyes and stops. Stop thinking of him, Sallie whispers to herself. Focus, focus on your life Sallie. This is your life. Peter the most loving husband is your life. What else do you want from your life. You have a beautiful daughter. You are so loved as a wife and as a mother. Sallie then goes on making omlette. She puts butter on the pan, the dash sound that comes out of the pan, reminds her of the horn that he used to beep in front of the college gate. It reminds her of how she used to wait for him to park the car so that they both could enter together the college gate together. Sallie missed the feeling of the ‘togetherness’, the slight touch of the hands. Back to again sautéing the veggies, putting some chicken sausages along with it, the lovely aroma that comes out of it. The aroma that increases the level of ‘oxytocin’. The ‘oxytocin’ of love that lifts your mood, interrupting by Bianca’s voice, “mommy, I need a toast for the school today.” “okay my darling, Sallie replies to her while giving her a morning hug.

Peter is done with the shower and getting dressed up for the office while Sallie prepares the tea and toast. Sallie puts the butter on toast and sprinkles flax seeds, black pepper, salt and some olive oil on the sauté veggies. Sallie prepares the beetroot juice and give it to Peter before breakfast. It’s her daily routine that she gives the juice to somebody who is not in her thoughts, but she adores that somebody, he is that somebody who makes her single moments happy, that somebody who never miss the chance to cherish her, that somebody who wants her to live the life to the fullest, that somebody who wants to grow old with her, that somebody who always make her feel special, that somebody who loves her, that somebody who is her husband. But still, something is missing and that missing thing is her college mate Mandy, her beloved, with whom she is not in touch.

“Mommy, I am hungry.” Bianca is all set to leave for the school. She sits at the table for the breakfast, she grabs two loafs of bread with jam kept on the table. She doesn’t like to eat veggies. There is a conversation going on between the father and the daughter where in Bianca complains about one friend of her who always try to ignore her, while Peter makes her understand about the values of life. Peter suggests her to not take these things seriously and to enjoy these silly things because in future you would most probably be laughing upon these things. All are having their breakfast. Bianca is a slow-eater. Peter having his eggs, chicken, sauté veggies, and bread. Peter is happy with the taste and its yummy. I am also cherishing it. Bianca is done with the breakfast, and is leaving for the school, giving hugs and kisses to both of us. Now we two are eating peacefully after the talkative Bianca has left.

Peter asking me to get ready by 1’o clock for lunch to which she said yes. Peter is very jovial in nature who always want to feel lively and this what I have always dreamed of.

“Sallie, today Mr.Bregg is coming for the meeting.” And my phone starts ringing. I am going to take my call while peter is having another loaf of bread along with tea.

“Hello, is that Sallie?”

Sallie: Yes, who is this?

I am, Mandy’s friend Chan. Is this the good time to talk.

Sallie: “a long silence”.

Peter: who’s on the phone Sallie.

Sallie is sure Chan must have heard peter’s voice by now.

Sallie making excuses to Chan:

“Hi, I am no more a consultant of an ABC firm, but if you want, I can send your resume to my colleague who are still working. Chan has got the hint and said “ok, thank you” and have asked for the right time to talk, to which I replied nothing and hung up the phone. I kept the phone on silent mode now. Now replying to Peter’s question, some guy is looking for the job and has taken my number from LinkedIn. Peter asked me to help him out and me with a shivering voice, “yes of course.” Silence prevails.

Peter has left for the office and Sallie is sitting on the sofa thinking about Mandy in a confused state of mind. Just took the phone and wanted to make a call but a belief of desperation came into her mind as if what will his friend Chan would think of her. A heavy heart filled with many questions and the illicit memories of him came into Sallie’s mind.

Sallie was remembering those times not of the college but that one meeting that she had after years of marriage, or after years of separation with him.

“The freshness of our love breaths revolves around,

Will make us forget all the dumps,

Our love is like an ambien

will make the nights happy,

I am fortunate to have your fetish.’

“Hi I am in Mandy, can you meet me?” A text that I got from him post marriage. When we first met after years of marriage, there was completely silence between us. I watched him coming close to me and he looked hot, wondering why hadn’t he got married yet. He said, “Hi, I replied, and he sat next to me.”

“How is Peter and your daughter?” he asked.

I said everyone is fine. They both went to a place where nobody usually come. The place had small rocks along with a serene path. One has to park the car 3 miles away to reach that spot. They parked the car and walked away. They started walking toward that spot. He reached for her hand and Sallie let him hold and then again silence prevails. They both were walking and suddenly something came into Sallie’s mind, she let go off his hand, surprising him, and walked on with just enough distance between them so that they couldn’t accidentally touch each other.

Sallie looked at him. He was still shy of other people, a reserved mature man, traits like matureness, strength, passion still persist within him.

Though his silence, he conveyed his love for Sallie. “what are we doing here?” she asked.

Few minutes later, he replied “to get that personal touch, which I longed for.” (silence prevails)

He suddenly changed the topic by stating to walk fast to which she replied to move slow and later he got the chance to mock at her by commenting to gain some strength to move fast. He further asserted, “you are still lean, beautifully dressed up. There is an elegance in your walk which he did not find in any girl.”

“you still know the inner Sallie. You still know how to make me feel comfortable. You still make fun of my antics the way you used to do in college and lastly, you still will not convey your feelings to me.”

Mandy : you know me better

This was the moment that they both wanted to get hugged, curled up tightly but alas it could not be possible due to the circumstances.

They both had that love which they never conveyed to each other in a proper manner or in words. The love exists in their eyes, and when their eyes meet, they speak through them.

The ‘eye-existent’ love is what they both were missing. The feeling of personal touch, where words are of no meaning instead the inner voice speaks.

Suddenly, she stood up from the sofa and started calling his friend Chan.

The phone starts ringing making fer feel nervous.

“Hi Chan, Sallie this side.”

Is this the good time to talk. Sallie, yes of course, Peter has left for the office.

Sallie to Chan, “what happened, is everything fine, is he alright, anything urgent?”

“Hold on Sallie, everything is fine. Take a deep breath. Don’t worry, I won’t bother you much.”

Sallie, “Hmm okay.”

“Sallie, actually the thing is that Mandy came here few weeks ago, and he met with an accident. Though he is not serious but in hospital and sub-consciously stating your name, so his mother had asked me to call this girl whose name Mandy has been chanting.”

Oh god, now his mother got to know about us, stated Sallie. She was extremely shocked to hear this and got petrified too upon hearing that his mother got to know about her.

Chan, “don’t worry Sallie, his mother won’t say a word to you, rather she would be happy if you make her son come out of his sub consciousness mind as doctor advised his mother to bring the girl whose name Mandy has been saying.

REUNION

It was 12.15 pm, Sallie opened her wardrobe in search of a good attire. Since everything was happening fast, she for a moment forgot the current state of Mandy instead she was getting dressed happily in her red maxi dress. While applying kajal to her eyes and looking herself in the mirror she realised that Mandy was hospitalised. She again turned back to her almirah and started joggling up with the clothes.

In a confused state of mind, she thought of wearing a light colour dress since the meeting was supposed to happen in the hospital, but suddenly her thoughts shifted to Mandy’s mother and started thinking the way an aunt would see her. At this point of time, she was in the dilemma of what to wear right for this kind of occasion. And at last, she decided to go for casuals, blue jeans and white ruffled collar top with little or no makeup. The dilemma continued to wear the right sandal and instead of sandals, she chose shoes. “Shoes over sandals, looks fine,” she whispered to herself.

Now, sallie all set to go, she locked the door of her place, started the car engine. While driving, all of a sudden, she called Peter to cancel the lunch date which they supposed to had at 1 pm.

“Peter, I am sorry, I won’t be able to make it up at 1.”

“Why, what happened?”

“Yes, Peter, everything fine. I want to go with my friend Lovi to some place. Peter replied “ok, fine”.

Lovi was Sallie’s best friend and infact they were the family friends. Both the families share their celebrations together.

“Ah! I am relieved now” Sallie whispered to herself, meanwhile rushing the car in the traffic at a speed of 60 km, blowing horns thoroughly one after another. She was driving really fast, infact much faster than an ambulance. There was a deep-teering feeling inside her, that she could burst into pieces if not meet him at time. When she parked thar car in the hospital, her leg muscles seemed frozen and all of a sudden, she cried heavily inside the car. The tears had a mixed feelings of happiness and sorrow; of meeting him but meeting at the hospital. But moreover, she was happy being felt special by Mandy, that may be somewhere in life, he still belongs to her.

The car was parked in the basement level 1 parking. She clicked the photo of the sign board since she had the tendency to forget the car parked in which level.

To the way to the upstairs, she was walking with heavy numbed legs, heavy heart, feeling fully drenched as if rain has showered upon her. The feeling of putting up the name of Mandy while asking about his room number, the name, as if the rain of happiness has bestowed upon her since taking his name in a loud voice especially after so many years of heart-to-heart talks to herself.

In a haste, she entered the patient’s lift and not realising it either that she took the wrong one. Anyways, she reached the level no.3 floor, the door of the lift gets opened and she saw a smart, elegant woman in her 50’s or 60’s and wondering if she was the mother. Then she moved forward in a state of confused mind to whom to approach. Chan noticed her and said “Hi”, to which she replied “Hi, How is he?”

“Well, Sallie, you meet yourself. But wait let me introduce yourself to his mother.”

“Aunty, please come here. Here she is. Sallie “Hi Aunty, how are you?”

“I am fine dear. Please meet him fast since you are the last hope.”

“Last Hope”, Sallie gets goosebumps upon hearing that. Sallie entered the room and found him lying on the bed with ventilator support. Sallie gets very weak after seeing his condition especially on the hospital bed. Mandy quilted with white sheet, his right hand tied with the canula, ventilator on his nose, everything was messed up with him.

Sallie wanted to take his pain. Only she could know the pain Mandy was feeling inside. Though his exterior persona was tough but by inside he is still like a baby to handle with care. Sallie wanted to hug him tightly but couldn’t due to his condition. She can only talk with him. Though Mandy’s couldn’t be able to move but as doctor said he could hear things clearly. So is Sallie here to revoke all the feelings inside him. She is the lighter of Mandy’s heart. She is been called to wake him up not only physically or mentally but psychologically and emotionally as well. Flashbacks of old smart, energetic Mandy’s has started coming in Sallie’s thoughts and she started crying heavily before saying anything to him.

Mandy, “wake up!” Please wake up. Look here, come on Mandy, look here please, atleast once. I am here, see your Sallie is here. Where have you lost?”

“See I used to tell you, to not take things too seriously, to not take life too seriously, to not think much and you never used to adhere. Now look where you are, lying on this damn bed, making everyone else around sad. Your mother is in a very bad condition, you love your mom so much. Look how beautiful your life has been. Try to memorise the days spent in the college, your dear friends, all are eagerly waiting for you to wake up.”

That was a one-sided conversation where Sallie unbreakably mincing the words after words, unstoppably talking and was just talking to him. But he not even nodded once.

Sallie trying to calm herself and on the other hand, Chan peeping inside from the door’s window in the hope of Mandy. But his situation is still the same. There are no waves in the sea and everyone had thought Sallie would bring the storm in him and he would wake up. Nevertheless, Sallie is still determined and conversing with him in a much lower voice.

“Mandy our love doesn’t have a name but it has a meaning, our love doesn’t have a purpose but it has a stronger and deep definition. Definition that can set a new level of examples, that can educate the future generations of new kind of love, this is that feeling.”

While expressing each and every single moment of her love towards him, he was still the same. Then she decided to put all her thoughts in her words.

On the other hand, in the other room, there was an old lady whose body has got fully paralysed and had been lying on the bed from past 2 months. Her dear husband had left her, way back when she was in her 50’s. At this moment, she was all alone, helpless, lying on the bed with her eyes opened wide, with the ears she can listen, with the brain fully functional but with body’s numbness.

Around 1’o clock, an old man visits this lady. This uncle was her beloved friend in their college days. They parted their ways due to the family pressures since the aunt belongs to the high prestigious family. They both were very different; they both came from different worlds and yet they taught the world the value of love.

Helpless and tired Sallie thought of taking a cup of coffee and moved out of Mandy’s room. She informed his friend Chan, that she was going to the cafeteria.

Sallie upon reaching the cafeteria,” please take my order”

“Certain Mam.”

“one hot cappuccino. And please serve it hot hot.” Sallie replied.

Sallie took the last seat in the cafeteria to avoid the crowd since she wanted to think of Mandy only. This is the time when the uncle sat next to her.

Sallie “Hi” while sipping her coffee.

Uncle, “Hi”.

They both sipping their coffee.

Sallie, “you are here for whom?”

I saw you crossing the room in which I was sitting.

Uncle “Ah, yes! I am here for my dear friend.”

“Oh, ok. Friend, I see.” Sallie exclaimed. “I thought she was your wife.”

No dear. “My friend”, Uncle replied.

(Silence prevails)

Sallie, “again, I am sorry, I thought she was your wife.”

Uncle, “no worries, dear. Actually, you are right in your mind. No need to be sorry. She is my life. Do you want to hear about our story?”

Sallie, “All ears!”

Uncle, “We were both in the same college. We used to love each other very deeply. Our love is fathomless. Due to her family pressure, we could not get married. So, for her family prestigious issue we parted our ways. Although she tried hard to convince the family but her family was adamant. And in those times, it was hard for the women to fight for their loved ones. “

Sallie, “oh, sad!”

Uncle, “but God has written some other lines for our lives. She was 20, when she got married. She was very beautiful and elegant. She was too soft to handle, soft like a feather. Her parents got her married to a rich brat of those times.”

“After that, we did not remain in touch. But somewhere once in a year, we used to talk to each other via telephone. And I never got married but never had a thought that destiny will play like this. “

“Her husband and she both decided to part their ways when they were in their 50’s. They had 2 sons. They both had a great marriage and even I don’t know the reason behind their separation. She never told me, though I have asked only once. And seriously, it doesn’t bother me much.”

“Still after her separation, we never met and only talk through phones.”

“And now, needless to say, when she is in her last days, God has bonded us with the time that nobody can enjoy throughout their lives. I daily visit her both in the morning and in the evening.”

“I come here daily to give her a sense of my touch, especially in her last days. To give warmth to her, I gently rub her hands, back and legs through my hard fingers due to old age.”

Sallie with tears in her eyes gets deeply connected with the story. She could feel this relatable. Relatable enough to give her the understanding of deep love. The love which doesn’t require to be together. The love which could be felt deep within the hearts. The love that creates pure and everlasting memory.

Sallie lost in her profound thoughts, thinking about her and Mandy, not listening anymore to what Uncle has been saying. A drop of tear rolled down from her eyes, got wiped by Uncle and suddenly she gets up from the chair, and said “sorry Uncle, will definitely hear rest of the story afterwards. But right now, I have to rush somewhere.”

She ran fast through the corridors, used stairs instead of lift. She did not even want to miss a second without talking to Mandy. She reached his room, and found his friend Chan sitting inside. She clears her throat.

Chan, “Hi. So, you’re back. What happened, you are sweating.” Everything alright Sallie.

Sallie,” hmm, yes.”

Chan, “okay, now I leave him onto you.”

“All the best.”

“Thanks Chan. Bye”

Chan, “see you outside”

Sallie all of a sudden start saying words in much peculiar voice.

“You used to go to gym in order to be fit and above that to flirt with me. Remember, how you used to flaunt your cuts, your curves to me in order to impress me. And your words Mandy, Oh God, so hilarious.”

Sallie laughing all aloud.

“The way I move with you, you also try to love me damsel.”

To which I used to answer,

“First fulfil all my dreams. Buy me a well scented iftar.”

Hahahha, remember Mandy.

Remember!

“Come on. I still have not got my iftar. Lol”

Sallie,

‘Then after applying your iftar to my body,

I would want you to stare at me,

that we both could catch the flu, fever of love.’

“Oh god, Mandy, how well I used to mock at your love. The more I teased you, the more you used to love me. Our small mocking fighty love.”

“And I always won. I always had a last word. To which we mocked together, teased together and now Mandy, crying together.”

Sallie crying heavily while lying on his chest, a tear of drop fell on his hairy chest.

Sallie, with tears in her eyes, singing a song, while lying on his chest.

‘From today on I am yours

My ears want to listen your name only.

I have dreamt of riding a horse with you

Our soul is like a button and buttonhole’

‘I swear, I will never forget your face,

Tattoo my name on your wrist

I don’t want anything else

Just to see you awake by my side’

‘Will spend our nights lovingly,

Will spend our morning cuddling,

Will spend our noon mockingly,

Will spend our evening walkingly.’

Hmmmm hmmm

“Wake up Mandy, wake up!”

Sallie punching him softly in his chest.

But Mandy still the same. Only Sallie knows how helpless she was feeling at that time. And now time is clicking fast. She sees her watch and its 2 pm now. She needs to go to pick her daughter from the school. She needs to rush to the school.

Sallie to Mandy’s mother, “Aunty, I will come in the evening since I need to pick my daughter from the school at 2.30 pm.”

“No worries, dear. Go after all she is your responsibility. I am glad to see how happily you are fulfilling your duties and responsibility as a mother, as a wife and also as a lover.”

Aunt and Sallie, having an emotional moment and hugging tightly.

“I could see my mom in you”

Sallie heading towards the school. While driving she was just thinking about Mandy. Mandy was on her mind.

“How to wake him up?” She whispered to herself while driving the car.

The car stops at the school. Sallie gives a hug on seeing her daughter and now driving back to home.

Tired Bianca sitting quietly in the car. They now reach their home. Both are having their lunch while watching the tv as this is their normal routine.

Sallie after finishing the lunch tells Bianca to take care of herself at home since she will be back by 6 pm in the evening. She needs to go to the hospital for her appointment with the doctor. She asks Bianca to not to tell this to her dad. Bianca” why mom, why shouldn’t I tell this to dad?”

Sallie was expecting this question from her side, “Baby, I don’t want your dad to be concerned about this since I only have fever, and he will become tensed. Also, he already has a busy schedule. So please”

“Okay, Mom, I understood.”

Sallie kissed Bianca and bid bye to her.

“Bye mom”

Its already 4’o clock and she have to be back by 6 pm. Sallie is very tensed. Driving fast, she doesn’t want to miss a second.

While driving, she is memorizing all the talks she had with Mandy some years ago and one thing clicked in her mind and that was the ‘personal touch’ once he asked for it and Sallie fulfilled it with the love.

With a smile on her face, she started enjoy the car ride thinking of that touch. Sallie reaches the hospital and parked the car. She then with an easy walk took the lift for the 3rd floor. The lift door open, she walks out of the lift. Aunty has been waiting outside the room and Sallie with a wonderful walk approaches aunty.

“Oh Sallie! You are here. You are looking much more relaxed now.” seems good.

Sallie didn’t utter a word and just smile as if she already knew some magic would happen.

“Is anyone inside”. No Sallie, you can go.

“We are waiting outside.”

Sallie was about to enter but she got interrupted with the uncle she had met in the canteen before.

“Hi Dear, I was looking for you.”

“Oh Uncle, is everything fine. What happened?”

“Yes dear. I just rubbed her hand softly, kissed on her cheeks and forehead. Gently touch her heart and hand and to our surprise she came out of coma.”

“Wow, it’s such a lovely news. Good luck uncle.”

Uncle with a huge smile, hugged her and said “See I told you there is some magic in hands, in touch.”

May be touch is mythical,

May be touch is magical,

May be touch is spiritual,

Surely touch is realistic one.

The vibes create out of touch is so strong that it could get deeply penetrated inside the cells of a human body.

Sallie rushes inside the room, locked the door from inside. Now there is no one in the room except Mandy and her. The dawn has already begun. The sun is setting slowly and has changed its colour to orange. Sallie looking at the sun through the window.

Sitting beside Mandy,

With a sun setting outside,

I can’t recall a better time.

Mind mazes,

Day dazes,

Eyes hazes,

Strikes crazy.

Time is slowing down,

And life is coming to an end,

Please Mandy, get up from this bed.

Toss and turn in the bed,

Like you are sleeping on the red roses horns,

Wake up!

Shake Up!

Shake Up!

Sallie murmurs in his ears, ‘Shake Up”.

Kissing his forehead, kissing his lips and rubbing his cheeks gently.

“Shake up”, whispering in the other ear. Holding his hand tied up with canula. Tightly holding his one hand and gently rubbing his second hand.

Softly kissing on his left chest where the heart rests. Putting her fist on his entire face. Putting pressure on his cheeks with her soft fingers, then eyes and lips.

Rubbing her hands on his chest gently. Rubbing his toes. Kissing hard on his lips.

Mandy, your personal touch which you have asked once.

Kissing his lips again,

Holding his hands tightly,

Kissing on his eyes.

Mandy, “I Love you” Please be with me.

By this Sallie gets up from the chair with a broken heart and tears in her eyes.

She didn’t look back and went outside the room.

Chan tried to stopped her. But with a sad face, she said sorry to Chan and left.

Sallie sits in the car and leaves the hospital. On way back to home, she received a call from Chan, “Sallie, Sallie, Mandy woke up.”

The car gets stopped. Sallie cries heavily, cries and cries. She takes a U-turn,

“I won’t repeat the same mistake,

I won’t let you alone now.

This has always happened with us,

We become alive in love,

But are not with each other.

God might have planned life like this but no more.”

I will change the lines written on our fist.

Though we had been felt alive being away, but our souls are deeply connected.

I want to live soulful life. Oh God! My soul is with him.

Sallie reaches the hospital, parks the car, in happy mood, gives happy walks. With a smile saying hi to everyone passing across the reception and in the lift.

When reaching the room, she sees his friend and mother sitting beside him. Without any hesitation or a feeling of shame or guilt, like she has been feeling earlier, Sallie comes close to Mandy. Sits on his left side, puts her hand on his chest. Looking at his eyes opened wide, she gives him a huge smile and hugged.

She doesn’t let him speak anything, put one finger on his lips. She just looking at his eyes opened wide and said “I Love You Mandy. I want to be with you.”

Fate has always been unfair with both of them. When Sallie has almost have forgotten the real world of hers, she gets a call from Peter at 6 pm, asking her whereabouts. To which she replied on the way back home.

This time the drop of tear flows from Mandy’s eyes upon hearing ‘the way back home’ said by Sallie. Mandy without any second thought asks Sallie to leave and with a heavy sink heart she left. Mandy’s mother tried to stop her but Mandy didn’t allow this to happen and has asked his mother to let her go, she has a family.

Mandy with teary-eyes leaves the room, where a dead body comes out from another room. She immediately rushes to the room where the Uncle was sitting and crying.

On seeing the uncle’s condition, Sallie encourages herself to be stronger. She tries to console uncle but everything went in vain.

Sallie and Uncle, both with teary eyes and numbed legs walk along the dead body, where uncle remarks about the life. Some love stories never get completed, mine was one of them. Sallie murmurs to Uncle, mine too. At this point of time, both hugged and cried. They both from unknown world creates a special bond. The age at par, the lives they are living was at par but still it was inter-connected somehow.

The story ends here, both Sallie and Uncle part their ways and has never met since then. Sallie gets busy in her ordinary life, while Mandy has gone forever without meeting Sallie once. Mandy and Sallie again not in touch anymore.

Sallie’s whole life kind is explained within the confines of a single day. It starts out in the morning and in the evening, but this whole time, we are getting images of her mind.

Stream of consciousness writing, takes you on a journey through a character’s mind. It allows for a grittiness that you can’t achieve with an ordered internal monologue. While stream of consciousness might read somewhat more surrealist than traditional storytelling, it’s the most realistic representation of human thought.

This natural train of thought may be seen as choppy or fragmented, but it can help to allow the reader to feel as if he is in the mind of the character or in the scene himself.
